Parents, kids and children’s environmental health advocates will be descending on the state capitol this Valentine’s Day with an important message to lawmakers – toxic chemicals like formaldehyde don’t belong in our kid’s toys, shampoo or other products.

Because over 50,000 Minnesotans called, emailed and visited their state legislators, we were the first state in the nation to ban BPA from baby bottles and sippy cups. Other states soon followed Minnesota’s lead and last year the FDA banned BPA from these products.

While we made great progress with BPA, the Minnesota Department of Health has identified nine dangerous chemicals (like formaldehyde, flame retardants and lead) in products our kids are exposed to every day. These chemicals are known to cause cancer, asthma, and developmental problems. Worse, they’re showing up where they don’t belong - in our kid’s bodies and our water.

Minnesota needs to continue to be a leader in protecting kid’s health from toxic chemicals. It’s time we pass the Toxic Free Kid’s Act of 2013, which would require the phase out of these nine toxic chemicals from children’s products sold in Minnesota.

Help ensure we take the next step in protecting children’s health by joining us February 14.
