Cure Gun Violence Day

  • March 21, 2017
  • 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Minnesota State Capitol

We have an epidemic of gun violence in our state and country that negatively impacts us every day. The threat to Minnesota is particularly acute right now, because four dangerous bills have been introduced in the state legislature, including a permitless carry bill that would make it difficult to ban guns in schools, hospitals, clinics, places of worship, colleges, and other sensitive places. Public health professionals, physicians, nurses, allied health care providers and social workers are in a unique position to change the conversation, focusing on gun violence as a public health crisis and advocating for patients and their families.

Protect Minnesota’s Health Care Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence will sponsor Cure Gun Violence Day at the Minnesota State Capitol on Tuesday, March 21, to help our legislators understand that gun violence is a public health crisis that can be cured with sound public policies and effective legislation.

The event will be bring together public health professionals with physicians, nurses, and allied health care providers to speak in one voice about the need to pass common sense gun legislation. And because we’re all recipients of health care services, all are welcome to participate.

9:00am-1:30pm — Capitol Visits and Deliveries
1)      Visit your state representatives and share your concerns about the expansion of gun rights in our state.

The Protect Minnesota staff will set up your meetings and send you an email with your individual visit schedule. We’ll also schedule you to attend a 15-minute training prior to your first visit. Register HERE today so we can start setting up your meetings.

2)     If you have more time to share, before/after your visits you can help deliver “prescriptions for saving lives” to law makers and the Governor’s office.

Each prescription will present information about bills that have been introduced that would help keep guns out of dangerous hands and protect Minnesotans from gun violence.

2:00pm — Rally and Press Conference
Help us fill the Rotunda of the Capitol with public health and health care professionals.  Arrive by 1:30pm.

Wear your white coat, scrubs and/or orange. We’ll have orange buttons, t-shirts and signs.

Leaders in the fields of public health, health care and social work, along with concerned law makers, will speak against dangerous gun bills and in support of criminal background checks, gun violence protective orders, and other helpful measures.

PLEASE NOTE: You don’t need to attend for the whole day; come for as long as you can. But try to arrive by 1:30pm to be part of the press conference.
