Exploring Power & Privilege: StarPower Simulation

A pre-conference simulation in conjunction with the

2018 MPHA Annual Conference:

“From Vision to Action: How Minnesota is Creating an Equitable Culture of Health”

Thursday, May 17, 2018

9:15 am - 12:00 noon

River's Edge Convention Center

St. Cloud, Minnesota

Annual conference participants, come to the River's Edge Convention Center early for a special pre-session, planned by the MPHA Health Equity Committee: "Exploring Power & Privilege: StarPower Simulation".

The concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion are socially complex and politically loaded terms.  Public health leaders bring their own understanding and interpretation of these concepts based on their own cultural identities, life experiences and political sensibilities.  StarPower is a simulation to help participants develop new perspectives on understanding equity by exploring individual feelings and behaviors as well as group dynamics regarding power and privilege.

Dave Nakashima, from San Francisco, will facilitate this community simulation on oppression, privilege, and power. See additional details below.

Registration notes:

  1. This training is limited to 30 seats. Please register early if interested!
  2. Please note if attending this session, you MUST also register for the Annual Conference.
  3. The session starts at 9:15 am sharp, and ends at 12:00 noon, so attendees can participate in the pre-conference networking lunch. A boxed lunch is included with this registration.
  4. To make a cancellation or waitlist requests, please Merry Grande.

Funding for this project is provided by the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, as part of Blue Cross’ long-term commitment to tackling the leading causes of preventable disease: commercial tobacco use, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating.

What is StarPower?
StarPower, a simulation that can help participants develop new perspectives on understanding equity.  StarPower is a learning opportunity to explore individual feelings and behaviors as well as group dynamics regarding power and privilege. StarPower will deepen your understanding of self and the exploration of individual insight/reflection in the context of group learning.

It is not possible to describe the StarPower simulation in much detail without diminishing the experience and with that said because it provides insights about equity it can be uncomfortable, as is the case with many powerful learning situations.  For these reasons it will be both important and valuable for participants to bring a strong appetite for learning and debriefing.  It will be an opportunity for you to experience first-hand and help us to assess the application of Star Power in the leadership development work you do.
