In this meeting of the Health Equity Committee, current and former staff from Voices for Racial Justice will introduce the Centering Community in Policymaking (CCP) framework-a Minnesota-grown tool designed to transform how policy is created. Rooted in solidarity and care, CCP invites us to rethink our roles in policymaking and ground our work in the leadership of directly impacted communities. The framework offers five key areas of reflection: Community Leadership, Root Causes, Collaboration, Navigating Conflict, and Confirming Impact. Participants will explore how each area provides guiding questions to deepen analysis, build collective strategy, and shift power. This session will offer practical takeaways for applying CCP to current policy effort: Racial Equity Impact Notes.

Speakers:

Nicole Donoso Sánchez (She/ella) wakes up every day with the intention to build a society where human dignity and social justice become customary. She was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2019 with a degree in Global Studies with a concentration on Human Rights and Justice in Latin America. She is a community organizer for the Colombian community in Minnesota and a documentary producer in her free time. Her mother is her only hero, and cookie-dough ice cream is her greatest weakness. She is a feminist and loves playing soccer with friends.

Mónica María Hurtado (she/her/ella) born and raised in Colombia, where she trained as a doctor in family medicine. She has been living in the US (MN) since 2001, and worked for a program funded by the Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative, and as a community organizer for Voices for Racial Justice. Currently, Mónica is completing her Bush Fellowship, focusing on returning to Indigenous practices and centering popular education in community organizing.
