Sexual and Gender Minority Health Initiative presents the third annual LGBTQIA+ Symposium. This year's event will be dedicated to LGBTQIA+ children and youth and their medical, behavioral health, and social needs. They invite students, community members, and healthcare professionals to join this free discussion on the role of modern healthcare in the lives of gender and sexuality minority and gender-nonconforming youth. Through expert and patient perspectives and interactive breakout sessions, they hope to offer a multifaceted educational experience. Keynote Speaker: Erica Anderson, PhD, Clinical Psychologist and Professor, University of California San Francisco will present "LGBTQIA+ Youth and Their Health: We've Never Been Here Before".

Speaker Biographies

Keynote Speaker: Archelle Georgiou, MD Dr. Archelle Georgiou is an experienced director, advisor, speaker, and author – who also happens to be a physician. But colleagues think of her as a lightning rod for change. One of Archelle’s greatest passions is using the media to educate consumers. Since 2007, she has been an on-air medical expert and covered more than 1100 different topics: from research, technology and clinical care to health insurance and healthcare policy. The underlying message to viewers in every segment is “doctors and patients are on an equal playing field…so use your voice and advocate for yourself.” Drawing on 20+ years of experience in patient care, managed care, media, and business, Archelle developed the CARES Model, a five-step approach that consumers can use to make healthcare decisions that balance the best medical care with their personal, professional, social, and economic preferences. In February 2017, she published her first book, “Health Care Choices: 5 Steps to Getting the Medical Care You Want and Need” (Rowman & Littlefield). Mid Day Plenary Speaker: Emil Lou, MD, PhD, FACP After completing undergraduate studies in biochemistry at SUNY College at Geneseo, Dr. Lou received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees (Microbiology and Immunology) from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2004. He performed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and then subsequently completed his Medical Oncology and Hematology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2010. He also completed an additional fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke. Dr. Lou, a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine. In addition he is also board certified in Neuro-Oncology through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. He joined the faculty in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation in 2011 and is a member of the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota. Health Equity Plenary: Vayong Moua Vayong Moua is responsible for developing strategy and action for Blue Cross’ prevention and health equity advocacy initiatives to reduce tobacco use, obesity, and health inequities among all Minnesotans. Moua focuses on integrating health equity into policy advocacy approaches and structural solutions. Moua currently chairs the Cultural and Ethnic Communities Leadership Council (CECLC) that catalyzed the Department of Human Service’s agency wide equity policy. Moua also co-founded the Minnesota Complete Streets Coalition that led passage of Minnesota’s state Complete Streets law.

Gaylord Anderson Lecture: Preparing for (y)our longer life

Join us for the 2019 Gaylord Anderson lecture, part of the School of Public Health’s 75th anniversary celebration, presented by Linda P. Fried, Dean and DeLamar Professor of Public Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. A world-renowned expert in aging, Dean Fried will share her thoughts on “Preparing for (y)our longer life.”

Dean Fried wrote, “The addition of 30 years to life expectancy changes societal opportunities as well as needs. Evidence indicates that there is great potential to increase health span into the oldest ages. This would enable societies to experience the benefits of longer lives and balance the needs of older age. Societal investment in these dimensions could create the basis for a ‘Third Demographic Dividend.'”

A world-renowned geriatrician and epidemiologist, Dr. Linda P. Fried is a serial innovator, known for tackling the major issues of our lengthening lives that affect our collective health and future. Her scientific contributions include creating the transformational science defining frailty as a medical condition, illuminating its causes and the potential for prevention and treatment as keys to optimizing health for older adults; and research on numerous dimensions on healthy aging. She is the designer and founder of Experience Corps, an evidence-based senior volunteer public health program in which older adults serve in public schools. The program has demonstrated prevention of cognitive loss and functional decline in the volunteers and large benefits to students. Dean Fried’s work extends to advocating the potential for longer lives to be the basis of a Third Demographic Dividend if society is designed to benefit from the social capital of older adults and invest in health promotion across the life course. Under her leadership, the Columbia University Mailman School has built a wide range of new dimensions of public health science, from the University-wide Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center to the new science of precision prevention, and has become a key leader in innovation in public health education and in intersectoral partnerships for health.

Dean Fried was named one of the 1% most influential scientific minds of the past decade in 2014 by Thomson Reuters. She is an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine, and of its executive Council. In 2016-17 she served as the President of the Association of American Physicians. She co-chaired the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council on the Future of Human Enhancement. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, she has been named a “Living Legend in Medicine” by the U.S. Congress, and in 2016, she received the French National INSERM International Prize in Medical Research. She is an elected member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

MPHA Members:

The Advisory Committee for Heritable and Congenital Disorders that advises the MN Newborn Screening Program has vacancies coming available in January and applications are now being accepted.

This committee meets twice per year (spring and fall). Meetings consist of program updates, review of pertinent topics related to newborn screening (including guest lecturers) followed by questions and discussion, and when applicable, voting on which disorders to add to Minnesota’s newborn screening panel. Members of this committee consist of parents, providers, and other experts with vested interest in newborn screening. Membership terms are for four years. At the end of the four-year term, members are welcome to re-apply. 

We are seeking a variety of representation of roles on our committee and are thus circulating our current vacancies in hopes of increasing the diversity and experience of those who apply. If interested, instructions for how to apply are below.

On behalf of the American Public Health Association, I am thrilled to announce the call for applications for the 2019 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government. This is the 10th year APHA is offering this fellowship, which previous fellows have described as an “amazing,” “phenomenal” and “life altering” experience. The fellowship provides a unique learning opportunity and demonstrates the value and need for basing policy on sound science.

Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C.  The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.

Training for the fellowship will begin in January 2019 so you must be able to move to the Washington, D.C., area in January. Throughout the year, the fellow will gain a practical knowledge of government and how the public policy process works.

Fellowship candidates must:

1. be an APHA member;
2. have a graduate degree in public health or a related discipline;
3. have at least five years’ experience as a public health professional beyond graduate or medical training (internships, graduate assistantships and residencies do not count);
4. be a citizen of the U.S. or its territories or have permanent residence status in the U.S.; and
5. not be a federal employee.

Candidates who do not meet all of the above criteria will not be considered.

Additional information, including the application form and brief articles from the previous fellows, is available on APHA’s website. The completed application, CV and three letters of recommendation are due to APHA by 6 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4, 2018.
